Our Learning

REMOTE LEARNING: DELIVERY OF INSTRUCTION

  • New content will be taught through pre-recorded mini-lesson videos on Loom
  • After watching the videos, still will have the opportunity to practice the new skill independently and turn it in so I can review it and give feedback
  • All content will be posted on Google Classroom
  • On Google Classroom, your child will access the mini-lesson videos and directions for their independent work on a slide of the day
  • New content will be taught 3 days a week, so there will be slides for each of those days
  • All lessons will follow a similar structure to our regular classroom: mini lesson followed by independent practice. I will then provide students with feedback on their work through comments, email, or video conference (Google Meet).

CONTENT AREA FOCUSES

Writing

5th grade will be teaching a persuasive writing unit during our remote learning. Students will learn more about this genre of writing and how to incorporate research to support their opinions. For the final writing piece, students will research zoos and write a persuasive writing piece on whether zoos should operate or not.

Reading

I am going to start with reading lessons that connect with our new writing unit on persuasive writing. Students will read different persuasive and opinion texts and learn to identify the author's claim, supporting evidence and they will use these texts to collect research for their persuasive writing pieces.

Since we are not in the classroom, students are unable to record their independent reading on their bookmarks. Students will be digitally logging their books on a Google Form. Students can find the Google From to log their reading by clicking here.

We also have a Padlet where students can post book recommendations to share great books with each other. Students can click here to complete a book recommendation.

Math

We have just finished reviewing how to multiply and divide fractions. Now students will learn how to multiply and divide decimals. I will continue to use our Pearson Realize curriculum for math instruction. Students will use the Pearson Realize website to show their works on digital workbook pages. They are able to show their work using the digital tools provided on the website or they can show their work on paper, take a picture of their work and share it with me. If your child needs help with this, please reach out.

Science & Social Studies

I will be providing science and social studies challenges for students as enrichement opportunities. Students will also be given additional STEM opportunities from our enrichement teachers that are posted on their Google Site. Here is the link to their Google Site!

Special Area Classrooms

On Tuesdays and Fridays students will have the chance to check in with their special area classroom teachers to see what activities of the week they planned for them.

Each special area teacher has their own way of connecting and posting activities for students. Students can use the document below to help you locate where to go on these days to see what their special area teachers have posted for them.
