Research Presentation at the Institute of Ethiopian Standards (IES) National Webinar 2026
Topics Presented on: "Standardization of Ethiopian Indigenous Foods and Beverages: Current Status, Challenges, and Future Perspectives"
I was honored to participate as a research presenter at the Institute of Ethiopian Standards (IES) National Webinar 2026, organized under the theme “Food Fortification and Standardizing Indigenous Products for Sustainable Development.”
The webinar brought together researchers, policymakers, academia, industry stakeholders, regulatory authorities, and standards professionals to discuss scientific approaches and policy directions for strengthening food quality, safety, and sustainable development in Ethiopia.
My research presentation, titled “Standardization of Ethiopian Indigenous Foods and Beverages: Current Status, Challenges, and Future Perspectives,” explored the critical role of standardization in preserving Ethiopia’s rich indigenous food heritage while improving safety, quality consistency, commercialization potential, and market competitiveness.
The presentation emphasized the need to establish science-based standards that connect traditional food practices with modern food quality and safety requirements. Standardization provides an essential pathway to transform indigenous products into reliable, value-added, and commercially viable food products while maintaining their cultural identity.

“Demonstrating the Benefit of Standards.”
Overview:
During the ISO Virtual Strategy Café Conference 2024, I delivered a presentation titled “Demonstrating the Benefit of Standards,” representing Ethiopia and the Institute of Ethiopian Standards. The presentation highlighted the strategic importance of standards in supporting innovation, improving product quality and safety, facilitating international trade, and strengthening national quality infrastructure.
The session provided an opportunity to share Ethiopia’s experience and perspectives on the value of standardization in sustainable development while engaging with international experts and representatives from national standards bodies around the world. The conference served as a collaborative platform for discussing how standards contribute to economic growth, technological advancement, and global interoperability.
(III). Seminar Presentation: Industrial Food Loss and Waste Reduction Project
This project focused on addressing industrial raw material losses associated with the discharge of liquid and semi-liquid products from Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBC totes). While IBC totes are widely used for transporting such materials, significant product loss can occur during the discharge process in production lines. At Heineken Brewery Share Company in Ethiopia, this challenge was identified in the processing of Sofi Malt (Syrup), where residual material remaining in the containers resulted in inefficiencies and economic loss.
To tackle this issue, the project involved the conceptual design, engineering development, and simulation of a specialized lifting and discharge mechanism capable of completely emptying the liquid contents from the IBC container. The designed system aims to minimize raw material loss, improve production efficiency, and ultimately enhance the company’s profit margin by ensuring maximum utilization of the syrup used in the manufacturing process.
Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) are large, reusable industrial containers designed for the storage and transportation of liquids, semi-liquids, and bulk materials. They typically have a capacity ranging from 500 to 1,200 liters and are commonly constructed from food-grade plastic or metal within a protective cage mounted on a pallet for easy handling.
Applications:
IBCs are widely used in industries such as food and beverage, chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and brewing to transport products like syrups, oils, liquid ingredients, chemicals, and fermentation media. Their design allows efficient bulk handling, safe storage, and easy integration with industrial production and filling systems.
Heineken Brewery Share Company is the Ethiopian subsidiary of the global brewing group Heineken N.V., one of the world’s largest beer producers. Following Heineken’s acquisition of several local breweries in Ethiopia, the company has become a significant player in the country’s beer industry, producing both international and local brands.
During my fourth year in the Food Process Engineering bachelor’s program, I had the opportunity to undertake an internship at the company. As part of this industrial training, I conducted a loss reduction project focused on minimizing raw material losses of sofi malt syrup in the production process. I applied 3D modeling, engineering design, prototype building, and process optimization concepts and learned during the program.
