About the college
Swami Sahajanand College, Jehanabad, popularly known as S. S. College, Jehanabad, was established on 26 July 1955 in the hostel building of G.M.S. School (the renowned V. T. School), Jehanabad. Since its inception, the college has consistently upheld the values of impartiality and secularism, providing access to higher education for students from all sections of society. This enduring tradition reflects the vision of its founder, the late Shri Shatrughan Sharan Singh, a senior Congress leader, freedom fighter, former Chairman of the Gaya (East) District Board, and former Minister in the Government of Bihar.
The institution was dedicated to Swami Sahajanand Saraswati, a great thinker, saint, social reformer, eminent figure in contemporary Indian politics, and a pioneering leader of the peasant movement in India. The foundation stone of the present main building of the college was laid on 5 May 1956 by the then Chief Minister of Bihar, Bihar Kesari Dr. Shri Krishna Singh, under the guidance of the founding Principal, Shri Chhote Narayan Sharma. Shri Sharma was not only an eloquent speaker and a distinguished propagator of Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy but also a devoted follower, who later became a resident of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry.
The college is located approximately 5 kilometres from the Jehanabad district headquarters on the Dhangawan Road, amidst lush greenery and dense vegetation. The campus spreads over about 23.50 acres of land along the banks of the Dardha River, offering a serene and conducive academic environment.
Named after Swami Sahajanand Saraswati, the college is a leading constituent institution of Magadh University, Bodh Gaya. It offers quality education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in general as well as vocational and professional programmes.
