Over 5.5 million restaurant workers lost their jobs in 2020, disproportionately impacting women and workers of color. Read the 2020 State of the Restaurant Workers.
In 2020 the hourly mean wage of workers in the restaurant industry was $12.90 and the annual mean wage was $26,830.
In 2020:
7 of the 10 lowest-paid jobs were in food preparation and serving related jobs.
3/5 of all workers in the restaurant industry earn at or below the minimum wage.
The restaurant industry is the largest source of sexual harassment; More sexual harassment claims in the U.S. are filed in the restaurant industry than in any other.
Workers in the food and drink service are more likely than workers in any other industry in the US to experience wage theft, often under the form of minimum wage violations.
Restaurant workers are often overlooked and unsupported when it comes to resources to help them overcome these or other challenges.
