Stories

The foundation of this resource is a set of four stories.

We are told by the Elders that stories come from the Creator, and we have roles and responsibilities to share them with the next generation. There are lessons in the stories, and even very old stories have relevance today.

Storytelling is about generosity and relationships. It connects us to each other, our land and territories, animals, the sky, the water, and the spirit. This is the Blackfoot way of knowing.

The slides below elaborate on Blackfoot perspectives on storytelling.

When we are told a story, there is a chance to reflect: What did I learn? What is the gift in this story? What is my responsibility?

We invite you to explore the four stories by clicking on the links below. Each story is connected with a traditional game, and together the story and the game can inspire learning by introducing important concepts and vocabulary. In this way, the resource aims to connect storytelling, land-based learning, and traditional games. You can find more stories and storytelling resources in the appendices.
