We wish we could tell you that every learner wants to be part of your class or session and every learner is fully engaged and committed. You already know that won't always be true. As a professional Instructional Designer, you have to be ready to face and overcome challenges that will be ever present throughout your career.
Like Maslow's Hierarchy of needs, technology should be one of the first challenges examined. If your learners struggle with the technology, that is less brain power and energy they can put towards the content and the learning. The technology should enhance the learning and shouldn't overshadow it.
Choose technology that enhances the learning
Ask yourself, what will my learner notice first? The technology or the content? (psst, it should be content)
Use technology that makes the experience easier for the learners
Provide clear and detailed technology requirements up front and offer support throughout
Make assumptions about learner's tech savy-ness
Wedge in new technology where it doesn't fit because you wanted to try it out
Expect learners to all be on the same level or have access to the same resources - offer options where you can
Get stuck using the same technology without exploring what is new, better, easier for your learners
