Welcome to music at Milton Academy! We are excited to offer a variety of courses that will allow students to grow as a community, developing skills and confidence along the way. At Milton, we believe that music is a discipline to be studied with rigor and intention, allowing students a deeper understanding of the world around them. However and more importantly, we seek to enable all students access to a mode of self-expression that can be shared with the world.
All Middle School students will take our Musician of the 21st Century general music course which meets three times a week for a quarter of the year, and students can also participate in one performance ensemble which meets once weekly throughout the year as part of the student's regular school schedule. Milton also offers optional private music lessons on campus for vocal singing, strings, winds, and percussion instruments. Financial aid is available to qualified students.

General Music (Grades 6, 7 and 8)
Description: In this three year general music program which all Middle School students participate in, students will explore a variety of music topics through hands-on learning to develop their musicianship and knowledge of basic musical concepts. Each year, students in this general music curriculum will cycle through three units taught by different faculty members: applied instrumental music, music technology, and theory/history. In the applied music unit, students will be introduced to a variety of classroom instruments including ukulele, piano, drums, and recorder. In music technology, students will learn to record, mix, and master music and produce their own electronic music compositions using a variety of music software. In music theory and history, students will explore music throughout history and learn to read, write, and sing music while learning about relevant music theory concepts such as rhythm, melody, harmony, tone color, form, texture, and dynamics.
Prerequisites: No experience is necessary. All middle school students are enrolled in this general music curriculum for one-quarter of the year as part of their arts rotation in addition to one of the ensemble courses throughout the entire year.
