Diversity, equity, and inclusion are fundamental to a strong community. Milton students grow by developing their own identities, learning from and listening to the lived experiences of others, and living and working among peers whose differences they accept with respect and care.
We commit to creating the anti-racist environment at Milton—free from bias, injustice, and bigotry—that our values demand. It is our responsibility to make certain that all students and adults feel safe, supported, and able to express all aspects of their identities without judgment or hate.
We commit to decolonizing our syllabi and repertoire, highlighting works composed by under-recognized and marginalized groups.
We commit to presenting guest artists and representation from a wide cultural perspective.
We commit to providing space for the voice and expression of individual students.
We commit to examining ourselves, and systematically advancing respect, equity, and justice.
Students come to Milton with a broad range of musical experience, interest, and talent. Regardless of level or prior exposure, Milton students learn to love and appreciate music—and to become skilled in the art—through performance. Whether in Orchestra, Jazz, Glee Club, or a cappella groups Milton faculty understand that music is meant to be heard. That means that students develop the skills of making music through learning a wide variety of pieces and sharing them with an audience. Exposure to many different composers and artists—spanning centuries—and practicing those pieces not only strengthens technical skills like chord progressions, but it helps students build a greater appreciation for the music, deeper interest, and remarkable skill over time.
