In a study done by Doyne (1987), he studied the effectiveness between aerobic and weight lifting exercise as a treatment for depression. Doyne’s study consisted of 57 women aging from 18-35 who are diagnosed with MDD. After screening, the participants were randomized to a running group, a weight-lifting group, and a waitlist control group for an 8-week intervention period (Doyne, Oosip-Klein, Bowman, Osborn, & Ilona, 1987). Results from the study indicated that both aerobic and anaerobic exercise reduced depression equally (Doyne et al., 1987). Research indicates that it doesn’t matter what type of exercise you do, both will reduce depressive symptoms.
