Journalism, above everything, taught me to be a leader in the positions I've taken on, as well as giving me the right skillsets to effectively lead a group. Here I will dive into leadership experiences I've had in my staff positions, what they taught me, and how they turned a shy student into a leader.
As Photography Editor, I was responsible for making sure the staff was creating quality photos, and tastefully showcasing them. I was also responsible for making sure our cameras were being taken care of properly. I would make Slideshows and assignments for the staff, helping the staff walk into photo coverage with confidence.
As Website Editor, I was responsible for managing our website through SNO, publishing stories, monitoring content, and making sure everything we produced adhered to AP Style and was timely and relevant. I would also host pitch days and hold each staffer accountable to a deadline that worked for both of us. This made sure our content was being put out at a good pace. I would also select online articles to be submitted to contests.
As Social Media Director for Livewire, I am responsible for ensuring we are using our platform to promote ourselves in a way that speaks to our audience- not only high school students, but the community. I am in charge of making sure we are using all of our resources and accounts to have the biggest outreach, and impact, while showcasing ourselves authentically, and getting people excited about our work.
Charged Media has given me the most valuable leadership experience to carry on with me through college and my future career. It has taught me how to delegate, plan events, combine everyone's skillsets to accomplish goals, follow a project timeline, communicate effectively, and how to work with businesses. Not only did Charged Media teach me how to build a strong team, it showed me how to celebrate our accomplishments, create new projects for ourselves and work together to showcase our innovation for the public to see. As a result all of us became more professional individuals who can hold ourselves accountable for getting the task at hand complete, and problem-solving every time we encounter a bump in the road. Whether it was a photoshoot, a poster, a meeting with a business-owner, a video, or a simple social media post, Charged Media more than anything helped me refine and finess every journalistic and visual skill I have learned in this pathway.
New Voices taught me that there is strength in numbers, and persistence. Determination is key with our group, as we found the most accomplishments were a result of the teamwork we all put in. New Voices requires each an every member to do their part, write letters, send emails, make posts, and tell their friends. More than anything, it highlighted to me just how important student freedom of the press is. It gave me a huge stance on this issue, and gave me the passion to stand up for making a change. This meant meeting with the KSVT, or staying after on school days to write, meeting with Senators, emailing secretaries- stuff I couldn't imagine having the courage to do when I was a freshman. My motivation was knowing I was standing up for what I believe in, and giving all KY Student Journalists the chance to have their voices heard.
I like giving my staff the opportunity to show me how they percieve their position and how they can work towards making the staff better as a whole. I also inserted a "True Colors" assesment to allow me to see what kind of personalities I have on staff. This helps me assign the right person to the right tasks when needed.
Every Friday, staffers are responsible for filling out a progress tracker to help them identify what areas they can grow in in the following week, and what projects should be a priority. This helps everyone stay on task, and knowing how their work is helping the staff move forward.
For each athletic season, Charged Media and both journalism and yearbook staffs host a "Media Day" for players to boost hype around their season, and give us useful photos and interviews for our content before the season starts. Charged Media and I would set up the event by creating photo stations, a check-in system, and setting up interview rooms. My role this year, was to create an organized itinerary for the staffers, showing each of them where they need to be and when. This was a time slot system, which I would monitor throughout the night, which helped the event run smoothly.
