FUTMinna MIGRATURITY PROJECT TEAM held a workshop designed to critically examine existing structures and practices surrounding migration with a view to identifying areas of strength, weakness, Opportunities and Threats that would ultimately add value to policy development. The workshop was held on 14th May 2026 with participants from Representatives of the University Management, the Nigerian Immigration Services, Nigerian Security and Civil defence corps, At Risk Children Initiative, National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, University Advancement and Development, university Staff Training Unit, Ministry for Humanitarian Affairs, Ministry of Education, West African Sciemce Center for Adaptive Land Use (WASCAL), Foreign students in FUTMinna, Students, Entrepreneurship Development Center, African Mobility Project, Directorate for collaboration Affiliation and Linkages, ITS unit, , Home grown Energy solution, university security services, University Public relations unit, information unit of the university among other participants.
The discussion is expected to provide standardised administrative procedures for outgoing and incoming students, establish migration support desks within universities, strengthen emergency response mechanisms and promote gender-sensitive and inclusive approaches to migration management in Higher Education Institutions across the region.
The workshop also examined findings from the project's SWOT analysis on migration in Nigeria, which identified the country's large youth population with strong educational and migration aspirations as a major strength, while high unemployment and pressure on the education-to-employment transition were highlighted among the major weaknesses. Participants further observed that Higher Education Institutions are strategically positioned to play critical roles in research, policy development and capacity building, although many universities still lack structured migration support services and standardised administrative procedures.
