Migration is a complex phenomenon influenced by economic, social, and environmental factors, shaping both origin and destination societies. The MIGRATURITY project focuses on Sub-Saharan Africa, recognising the role of higher education institutions (HEIs) in addressing migration challenges such as brain drain, illegal migration, and social
inclusion. By fostering collaboration between European and African HEIs, the project aims to build capacity, develop sustainable solutions, and promote security, social cohesion, and informed policymaking.
Namely, migration remains a crucial topic in EU-Africa relations, with a significant focus on African migration to Europe, often overlooking intra-African migration and its broader impact. The European Agenda for Migrations (EAM) employs both securitised and non-securitised approaches, with the later addressing root causes and promoting integration,
as exemplified by the MIGRATURITY initiative. This project, involving European and African partners, prioritises Ethiopia and Nigeria due to their migration priority status, migration dynamics, and potential for increasing HEI capacities. MIGRATURITY aligns with long-term EU and SSA strategies to tackle irregular migration by fostering sustainable development and strengthening migration and security capacities of HEIs, but also of other target groups such as HE staff and students, relevant civil servants, police departments, etc.
Additionally, it emphasises gender and social inclusion, recognising that migration experiences and challenges vary based on gender, necessitating inclusive policies for effective migration management.
