At Mid Dorset Mencap, we proudly champion the rights and needs of individuals with learning disabilities across our local area. Our mission is rooted in care, support, and education—ensuring that every person has the opportunity to reach their full potential and live a fulfilling life.
While we are affiliated with national Mencap, we operate independently and do not receive funding from them. This allows us to focus entirely on the needs of our own community, shaped by the people who live here and the values we share.
Mid Dorset Mencap is more than just a charity—it’s a close-knit community where everyone is welcomed and valued. Our charity shop is at the heart of this, not only raising vital funds but also serving as a warm and inclusive space where friendships are formed and everyone feels part of the MDM family.
We’re especially proud that people with learning disabilities volunteer with us, contributing their time, skills, and energy. Their involvement is central to everything we do, and their presence helps create a truly inclusive and empowering environment.
We work to create a society where individuals with learning disabilities are supported and empowered to participate fully. Through financial support, advocacy, and the dedication of our members, we aim to enrich the lives of those we serve, their families, and the wider community.
This is our Celebration Wall—a proud display of the achievements that make Mid Dorset Mencap shine. From our Volunteer Team of the Year award to individual training successes and personal milestones, every name and certificate tells a story of dedication, growth, and community spirit.
We celebrate everyone who contributes, especially the people with learning disabilities who volunteer with us. Their achievements are at the heart of what we do, and this wall is a daily reminder of how far we’ve come—together.

Sarah Reed
We are incredibly fortunate to have Sarah as our manager here at Mid Dorset Mencap. Sarah joined us in 2023, initially as a volunteer, and quickly made a lasting impression through her dedication and care for our community.
Her passion and expertise soon led her to take on a broader role overseeing the shop, and since then, she has completely transformed the space. The shop is almost unrecognisable compared to two years ago—thanks to Sarah’s vision, hard work, and commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Sarah’s leadership, organisational skills, and positive energy have been instrumental in driving the improvements we’ve seen across the charity. We’re proud to have her guiding our team and shaping the future of Mid Dorset Mencap.
