The Getic Carbonate Platform forms large scale outcrops in various regions of the Southern Carpathians. The Eastern Sector of the Getic Carbonate Platform was studied previously by numerous authors.
Previous contributions were focusing mainly on the study of shallow water carbonate deposits from the Piatra Craiului Massif or the Dâmbovicioara Zone. The main goal of this study is to decipher the geolofical evolution of the Eastern Getic Carbonate Platform. The Postăvaru-Piatra Mare region represents an intermediary paleobathymetric sector located between the shallow water carbonates of the Dâmbovicioara Zone and the deep water carbonates belonging to the Bucegi Mountains
A first challenge consists in accurately placing the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous limit in the entire area. A second issue is represented by choosing the best sampling method of the carbonate deposits. The study area is defined by the presence of tectonically complicated structures. Thus, sampling direction will be performed on transverse sections in respect with the most important structures. This method is applied in order to avoid sampling the same carbonate bed.
Two distinct fieldwork activities will be deployed in 2020 and 2021 respectively. Carbonate samples will be collected in order to prepare thin sections. This material will be interpreted in terms of microfacies associations and micropaleontological content. Microfacies associations are used to interpret paleoenvironments while microfossil associations can be used to improve the biostratigraphic framework in order to define the age of studied deposits.
At a final stage, all this data will be integrated in order to reconstruct the geological evolution of the Eastern Getic Carbonate Platform.
