dissonance, 2024
Background
Dissonance (2024) was developed in response to the lived experience of train journeys transversing Ireland, transitioning from early morning rural landscapes to immersion in an urban environment, and back again in the evening.
Sleep deprivation, and the embodied shift between contrasting locations, while absorbing a concentrated flow of post-modern philosophical concepts contribute to what can feel like a slightly disjointed reality.
Sound recordings capturing ambient sounds of Heuston Station, including the Public Piano, and the surrounds constitute the core of the audio piece which features pre-recorded announcements, and my own voice. I am interested in how voices inhabit a space, create an atmosphere, induce emotional states, without the need for specific words to be decipherable.
Considering societal progress, I want to bring attention to non-human voices which are marginalised as we forge ahead in our industrialised world, and so the last ‘word’ to given to a resident raven pair that build their nest near my home each year.
