dissonance, 2024
Background
Dissonance (2024) is a response to taking a train journey across Ireland on a weekly basis, transitioning from early morning West Coast rural landscapes, to immersion in the urban environment of Dublin City on the East Coast, and then back again in the evening.
Sleep deprivation, and the embodied shift between contrasting locations contribute to what can feel like a disjointed reality.
Sound recordings capturing ambient sounds of Heuston Station, including the Public Piano and the surrounds constitute the core of the piece. I am interested in how voices inhabit a space to induce emotional states, without the need for specific words to be decipherable.
I also want to bring attention to non-human voices which are marginalised as we forge ahead in our industrialised world, and so the last ‘word’ is given to a resident Raven pair that build their nest each year near my home in County Mayo.
