It is very rare to find an iconographer who is self-taught, and usally they are not the greatest at what they do. Michael is still very young in his iconographic career, yet firmly belives that in order to be a good iconographer, you must be mentored. His icons are influenced heavily by those of Dr. Isaac Fanous and his students and he has assisted with many projects by students of Fanous. Below you will find some experience he has gained, as well as a short description of the work and some photos from each project.
Emmanuel Center Jersey City (2023-4) Lasting from november of 2023 to march of 2024, the world renouned Stephene Rene executed a major iconographic project which included a large iconastasis in addition to a large mural. Michael assisted with the project, providing valuable insight into the history of the parish and some iconographic ideas which were incorperated into the church. In addition to this, Michael also prepared Gesso boards for most of the panel icons to be painted upon.
Archangel Michael and St Mina Staten Island (2023) This project entailed about a week of work. The large mural of Christ was prepared in Egypt on canvas, then flown into New York and attached to the wall. Michael assisted the process of attaching the icon to the wall as well as touching up some damaged parts of the icon and lettering verses attached to the icon.
Our Lady of Zeytoun Staten Island (2023) Compared to the other church project on Staten Island, this project was much more vast,. This phase of the churches iconographic program entailed writing icons for the whole celling of the church with scenes from the new and old testement. However simmilarly to the other project, most of the work was done in. Egypt, the real learning came from attaching the icons to the celling and touching up damaged areas.
