Unit 5

Unit 5 was research-based and centered around learning more about emerging technology that is continuing to evolve today; my selection had personal roots and it was an interesting project to learn more about robotics in gynaecological surgery. 

Emerging Technology Project

For my emerging tech subject, I selected robotics in laparoscopic surgery. Medical science is ever-evolving and I have personal experience with and investment in this topic as someone who has had an endometriosis excision and hysterectomy before. An interesting fact that I learned is that the first da Vinci system was introduced in 2000, my birth year. Its recent iteration of HugoTM RAS first was used in 2021 and more surgeries are completed with robotic assistance every day. 

I learned a few different lessons while working on this project; one about my medical interest and another about PowerPoint. First, I find the topic of medicine in life interesting as it precedes the chemistry of post-mortem care and is relevant to my major (Mortuary Science). Also, I have been a pretty devout Google Slides user since schooling and I found PowerPoint similar and relatively easy to operate after completing the SIMpath.
