Morehouse NROTC traces its origin back to 1984 when the Navy desired to establish a presence in the Atlanta University Center (AUC). AUC NROTC began as a cross-town to Ga Tech based out of Morris Brown College. Commander (Ret) Fred Espy and Masterchief (Ret) Jeff Hutchinson were given responsibilities for recruiting and developing the unit. With tremendous early success, the Navy later made the decision to make Morehouse College the host college of NROTC with Spelman, Clark Atlanta University, and Morris Brown as affiliated colleges. The move was finalized in 1987 and NROTC occupied Sale Hall and the Sale Hall annex for its first ten years. Due to downsizing of the military after the Gulf War, Morehouse and Georgia Tech were combined into a consortium in 1994. As a consortium, Morehouse continues to be a host institution and shares some permanent staff with Georgia Institute of Technology. Morehouse NROTC will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2017. Morehouse NROTC has commissioned over 200 Naval Officers since 1987. Over thirty years later, Commander Espy and Masterchief Hutchinson are still actively involved in recruiting and mentoring midshipman and staff. Morehouse has a reputation of producing some of the finest Naval Officers in the United States Navy and Marine Corps.
