Mei-Hung Chiu is a Professor Emerita of the Graduate Institute of Science Education of the National Taiwan Normal University. Her research areas include (1) eliciting students’ conceptional construction and conceptual change in science education, (2) promoting model-based and modeling-based instruction and developing students’ modeling competence in science education, (3) investigating the effectiveness of the use of counter-intuitive scenarios via facial recognition system and exploring whether facial microexpression state changes can be used to identify optimal moments of conceptual change in science learning, and (4) applying augmented reality for learning structures of organic compounds.
She received the Distinguished Contribution to Chemical Education Award from the Federation of Asian Chemical Societies (FACS) in 2009, the Distinguished Contribution to Science Education Award from the Eastern-Asian Science Education Association (EASE) in 2016, the Distinguished Woman in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering from International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) in 2021, the Distinguished Contribution to Chemistry Education, Committee on Chemistry Education, IUPAC in 2024, and the Distinguished Contribution to Science Education Through Research from National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST, USA) in 2026.
She served as the President of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST) based in the USA from 2016- 2017, the chair of the Committee on Chemistry Education (CCE, 2012-15), a member of the Bureau and the Executive Committee (2016-2019, 2020-2023), and a member of the Governing Board of the International Science Council (2022-2024).
Finally, Dr. Chiu has supervised 108 advisees to earn their advanced degrees (21 in Ph.D. and 87 in M.S.) in science education. She also has three patents on the design of a hierarchical assessment items system and method, an assessment system, and the method of the use of facial expression recognition technique.
