AmeriCorps State Service Program

We serve the state of South Carolina in partnership with Mental Health America of Greenville County.

New AmeriCorps Members Ready to Serve!

On Monday, August 28th, MHAGC's AmeriCorps program held orientation for its new 2023-24 AmeriCorps members. Five new members joined one returning member as they listened, learned, and geared up for a year of service on the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline housed at MHAGC.

New members will complete more than 80 hours of training covering topics critical to effectively supporting callers on the Lifeline, such as active listening, community resources and crisis intervention. MHAGC's AmeriCorps Program Director, Theresa Alvarez, was excited to welcome this year's members, saying, “The energy in the room during orientation was so invigorating and focused on a successful year of service!  I look forward to seeing the impact this group has over the coming year.”

September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance

More than two decades ago on September 11, 2001, many lost their lives to the 9/11 attacks. We remember and honor the sacrifices made that day and the sacrifices that continue to be made by members of our armed forces, emergency responders and their families by uniting through service and volunteerism throughout our communities.

On Wednesday, September 6, 2023, MHAGC's AmeriCorps program members partnered with Upstate Warrior Solution (UWS) for our September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance event. MHAGC staff, AmeriCorps members participated along with guests from the South Carolina Service Commission (SCSC) and Impact America. Together, the group created over 400 thank you cards for First Responders in Upstate South Carolina. UWS will deliver these to all first responders in the five counties of the Upstate they serve.

What you'd get

In Their Own Words

Members of the Greenville County Behavioral Health's (GCBH) AmeriCorps State Service Program contributed over 2500 hours of service on MHAGC's 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline this year! As they take stock of their service year, take a look at what our 2022-2023 AmeriCorps members have to say about what they've learned or accomplished through this experience.

The position allowed me to deepen my empathy and dig into depths of myself mining more compassion for others. This experience used tools within myself that I did not know I had and I’m grateful for this awareness.

Tana

I’ve learned that I can remain calm in a difficult situation and that I can compartmentalize situations so I don’t let them consume my life outside of the office.

Relax, trust the process and enjoy the ride.

Lisa

I got in to grad school at App State and will be working towards becoming a licensed therapist. I want to work with trans kids with trauma in a therapeutic setting of a sensory garden.
