September 2023

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. As you might expect, this is an important month here at MHAGC, one in which we feel a renewed call each year to examine how we are addressing this important aspect of mental health. In this issue, we bring you stories of how not only MHAGC but also our neighbors, friends, and allies are doing so, as well. Please read on to hear those stories.

Drawing the Circle Wider

Learn how Nicole Coleman, Volunteer Coordinator/Trainer for MHAGC's 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, is helping MHAGC partner with South Carolina agencies and communities not only to extend the reach of 988 but also to ensure everyone has both access to and confidence in their experience engaging with the Lifeline.

Ready to Serve and Honor the Service of Others

The new AmeriCorps year has begun! Check in on how our new AmeriCorps members' year is starting off and what they've already done to honor the service of others, but on 9/11/2001 and today.

Youth Mental Health in the Digital Age

September presents many opportunities to learn more about youth mental health right from the device you're using to read this! Mark your calendars for three digital events during this National Suicide Prevention Month.

Push, Pull, Swing

We have not one but TWO October fundraisers we want to tell you about. Read about Carolina Barbell Club's Strengthtoberfest event that promises a lift! In this case, that's a powerlifting push-pull competition benefiting MHAGC. You can also read our interview with Jake Henderson, one the event founders, and find out why mental health matters to him.

Save some room in your fall social calendar, though, because our 9th Annual Benefit Golf Tournament is coming up soon. Find out how to register your team and check out the kinds of sponsorship opportunities available.

Supporting the mental health needs of South Carolinians requires the work and contributions of many heads, hands, and hearts. Please join us this National Suicide Prevention Month in honoring the work of so many in our community who strive daily to lift others up.

All the best,
