Mental Health Matters

News from Mental Health America of Greenville County

From the Director's Desk

October 2023

Greetings, all! Are you enjoying the cooler weather and cozy fall feel October has ushered in? Well, we are, too, but even as the seasons shift toward rest and reflection, we are nowhere near settling in. In fact, we have quite a few things going on around here this month. Before you read on, grab your calendar, because in addition to news, celebrations, and observances, we have quite a few invitations in this issue, too.

Big News

Right off the bat, we wanted to announce that MHAGC’s crisis services programming, which includes our 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, was recently awarded renewed accreditation through the American Association of Suicidology (AAS). Certification through AAS is a rigorous, months-long process, and we are so proud to have been recognized for high standards and hard work in our crisis services.

Special Recognition

We also want to take a moment to honor those with whom we have strong connections in this crisis service work. Remember our AmeriCorps program’s September thank you note drive for emergency responders? See how some of those responders received our thanks, and if you or a loved one is an emergency responder, please also take a look at the mental health resources available for those who show up in our darkest hours.

We’re also looking ahead to November 18, International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. You’ll find more information about this observance and a listing of events around South Carolina for those who have experienced this kind of deep and personal loss. Please take time to learn more.

Whether or not you are a suicide loss survivor, you can participate in the Suicide Prevention Walk that same day hosted by Positive 24/7 and Lever Gear. We are honored when community groups use their time and voice to benefit our mental health programs and services. In fact, we’d like to give a special shout out to Furman University’s student PHOKUS group for raising over $1000 this month for MHAGC! THANK YOU!

'Tis the Season

Got those calendars ready? First and foremost, if you have not already done so, please mark your calendars and plan to join us for MHAGC’s 9th Annual Benefit Golf Tournament on Thursday, October 26th. Register your team, find out about sponsorship information, and get your event questions answered. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!   '

Next up is Strengthtoberfest on Saturday, October 28th. This special event, hosted by a founding member of the Carolina Barbell Club, will raise funds for MHAGC and awareness about the connections between physical and mental health. While you’re considering ways to support the agency, please also plan ahead to participate in our annual Operation Santa Claus drive, which provides items of basic need for our neighbors living with chronic mental illness at the holidays. And last but not least, please put the 2023 Upstate Behavioral Health and Wellness Forum on your calendar for November 13th.

We hope your fall days, however you spend them, are full and fulfilling for yourself and your loved ones. Thanks so much for engaging with us here at MHAGC.

All the best,
