Mental Health Matters

News from Mental Health America of Greenville County

From the Director's Desk

August 2023

As days begin to grow shorter and schools prepare to welcome back students and staff, we enter the final full month of summer aware that it is a season of transitions.

Year Two of 988 Begins

Last month, we celebrated completion of the first full year of 988 operation in our state, including the opening of a second call center to address the needs of more South Carolinians. Like our state, many others recently reflected on the first anniversary of the nationwide change to 988. You'll find a number of articles on this topic that include a look at the data, some early outcomes, and thoughts about what comes next as 988 enters year two.

The GCBH AmeriCorps Program Looks Back and Forward

Three of the many people who staffed our 988 call center here at MHAGC over the last year will be bidding us farewell as they wrap up their 2022-2023 service year with our Greenville County Behavioral Health (GCBH) AmeriCorps State Service Program. Take a look at the impact of their work and see how we celebrated their service with MHAGC. We've nearly completed recruitment for our 2023-2024 AmeriCorps service year, but if you're interested in applying for one of the remaining positions, please look for information on our GCBH AmeriCorps State Service Program page and apply

August Is Back to School Time

Our AmeriCorps members are not the only ones looking ahead to what's next. As a new school year approaches, student mental health is in the spotlight on the In the News page of our newsletter. See the efforts South Carolina has made to increase school-based mental health services as classrooms re-open and check out the local back-to-school guide also linked there.

Getting into the Swing of a New Season

For us, the start of a new school year brings on thoughts of fall days to come, which is getting us all excited for our 9th Annual Benefit Golf Tournament. The event takes place at The Preserve at Verdae on October 26th. Please plan to join us! You can access registration, sponsorship and support opportunities, and more information on the Support MHAGC page of our newsletter.

Celebrating endings and new beginnings - big or small, personal or public - can come with a range of feelings, from uncertainty to excitement, hesitancy to hope, and many in between. Please remember that no matter where you are in whatever transitions you may be experiencing, we are never more than a 3-digit phone call away. 988 is for anyone, anywhere, at any time.

All the best,
