I am very proud of the lab course Algorithmic Battle, which I have hosted in recent years:
In this unique teaching concept, some teams compete against each other by writing an instance generator and an instance solver for given problems. Then each team's solver must try to solve the generated instances of the other groups. Therefore, the students will find out themselves what makes problems hard. Furthermore, they might realize how important rigorous testing is.
In Winter 2025/2026 for the first time, we also welcomed students from partner universities to join the lab remotely, allowing all students to get experience of working in one group with international peers without the need to travel physically.
I am proud that we received funding from a Freiraum Grant by Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre, from a grant in the ICON ENHANCE Call 2025, and from the ENHANCE Testbed Competition, in order to develop and improve the lab course.
There are plenty of ways on how to motivate yourself for algorithms - and one of them is to go to a competition to challenge yourself and others. To practice for them, we were organizing lab courses with weekly mock-competitions.

Response of Donald Knuth
For his book "The Art of Computer Programming", Donald Knuth regularly asks on his website to try the exercises stated in recent chapters, and to write whether we think they are solved correctly or if they contain bugs. At RWTH, we organized a course where we, together with our students, tried to find answers to some of the stated problems.
And indeed, some of our students received a check from the Bank of San Serriffe .
In 2022 and 2023, I have been the initial leader of the RWTH Aachen Team at the International Mathematics Competition for University Students (IMC) in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. I am glad to see that there have been a RWTH team every year since then.
