Our lab investigates molecular mechanisms of how microbes interact with humans and other microbes (including bacteriophages) to understand their life and physiological characteristics. We also develop innovative strategies for combating harmful (foodborne) pathogens and harnessing beneficial microbes. Specifically, we study microbial attack mechanisms (e.g., protein toxins and virulence factors) and host defense mechanisms (e.g., immune responses and bacteriophage resistance) using advanced approaches in molecular microbiology, microbial genetics, and cellular/biochemical research. By integrating engineering biology and systems biology, we also aim to leverage these microbial traits for beneficial applications.
