MSK 2025 International Meeting of the Microbiological Society of Korea at Suwon (Oct. 26~Oct.28, 2025)

Byoung Sik and 4 graduate students attended the 2025 MSK meeting. Byoung Sik delivered the opening talk of the first session - Bacterial Pathogenesis. 

MSM Lab Awarded New NRF Grants (September 1st, 2025) 👏
The MSM Lab. has been awarded a three-year grant from the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) for its Pioneering Research Program. In addition, congratulations to Ra Young, Ji Min, and Seungri on receiving the NRF Research Grant for Master's Students!

Announcement: Laboratory Relocation to Sogang University 

We are pleased to announce that our Lab. will be relocating to the Department of Life Science at Sogang University, effective September 1, 2025. We are also deeply grateful to Ewha Womans University for the generous support that have nurtured our research over the years.
We are incredibly excited about the new opportunities for research, collaboration, and education that this move will bring. It provides us with a valuable chance to broaden our research scope beyond Food Science, venturing into the wider fields of Life Science as well as Biotechnology. Our core research mission will continue, and we look forward to advancing our work in a new and dynamic environment.
For prospective students and collaborators, please note that all future inquiries and applications should be directed to our new affiliation at Sogang University. (bskim@sogang.ac.kr)

2024 International Meeting of the Microbiological Society of Korea at Yeosu (Oct. 30~Nov.1, 2024)

We 👨🏻‍⚕️👩🏻‍⚕️👩🏻‍⚕️ attended the 2024 MSK meeting at Jeju island ✈. Seo Yeon and Yunjeong won 🥇 the best poster presentation award and outstanding oral presentation award, respectively. Congratulations! 👏👏🎉🎉
And Byoung Sik gave a talk at the Session 21, Recent Advances in the Molecular Biology of Microbes in Host Environments.

MSK / MiYES Mini symposium on Microbial Physiology and Biochemistry (Aug 22~23. 2024)

Together with Dr. Cha lab, we hosted MSK/MiYES mini symposium at Ewha Womans University. Great talks from PIs, Post-docs, and students who are studying important basic properties of tiny organisms.

Research paper published! (July 23. 2024)

Research paper about the molecular function of the 'Domain of Unknown Function at position 1 (DUF1)' is published on the Nature Communications! Changyi and Byoung Sik contributed the study as co-authors, proposing and elucidating the biochemical function (NAD+ hydrolase) of this enigmatic domain of the MARTX toxin. I extend my sincere gratitude and congratulations to Mr. S. Choi, my former trainee at KRIBB, and also to Dr. M.H. Kim for their dedication for the project.  (The study has been featured in Magazine)

Attending International Symposium on Infectious Diseases in Aquaculture at Shanghai / Visiting ECUST (July. 15~18, 2024)

Byoung Sik was invited as an international speaker for the symposium hosted by the East China University of Science and Technology at Shanghai, China. Enjoyed the symposium and had a wonderful time with new friends who studying molecular pathogenesis of zoonotic pathogens, like Vibrios. Thank you Drs. Qiyao Wang, Shuai Shao, Yibei Zhang, and many others :)

Won Research Funds from National Research Foundation of Korea (한국연구재단) (June 1st, 2023 & September 1st, 2023)

한국연구재단의 기초연구실(Basic Research Lab.) 사업에 선정되어 구강마이크로바이옴과 쓴맛 수용체, 쓴맛 인지의 관련성 연구를 시작하게 되었습니다. 이화여대 식품생명공학전공 이혜성, 박진병 교수님, 그리고 가톨릭대학교 생명공학과 강남주 교수님과 함께 진행하는 집단과제입니다. 

한국연구재단의 기초연구사업 중견연구(Fund for Mid-career Researcher)에 선정되어 세균 단백질 독소에 관한 기초 및 응용연구를 심도있게 진행할 수 있게 되었습니다. 2007년부터 시작해 지난 17년 동안 연구해오던 주제를, 이제서야 학생연구원들과 함께 더 발전시킬 수 있게되었습니다.  

현대 생명공학의 창시자 Dr. Stanley N. Cohen 교수님께서 지난 한국 방문에서 공유해주셨던 슬라이드를 다시 떠올려 봅니다.
각자의 자리에서 지식의 한계를 넓히려 고군분투하시는 선후배/동료 기초연구자분들께 깊은 감사와 응원의 말씀을 올립니다.

New BSL 2 Lab (Dec. 18th. 2019)

According to the EWHA IBC's advice, LMO work-space was moved from Room B161 to Room B157! From now on, all the microbiological experiments should be done in this New BSL 2 Lab.

Room B161 will be used for in vitro molecular works (& for students' office).

Research paper about the small-molecule inhibitor targeting virulence regulator in Vibrio species was accepted in the Scientific Reports! Byoung Sik, with Z.-W. Lee, had conceived, designed, coordinated the research and performed the cell & microbiological experiments.
