The object of the program is to identify and to provide ongoing support to disadvantaged disabled children living in Moratuwa, south of Colombo.
In the recent past Meth Mihira has faced a difficult situation of having to raise funds for the running of the center. The students are from the low middle class and are not in a position to help the centre financially in a substantial way.
We, as a congregation are truly convinced of the absolute need to carry on this service for these vulnerable children. We do our best to raise funds locally and to concentrate on the extracurricular activities such as the sale of hand work etc. to supplement our income.
The child’s growth also helps the problems faced by the families as often these are more than they can bear. Training of the student enables him or her to eventually take their rightful place in society and to some extent be a contributive member.
The child with intellectual handicap is a child/person like any other. There are latent and hidden talents which need to be discovered and nurtured. However, the general norm is that they will not perform to a high degree of ability except in exceptional cases, it’s important to know and understand a child’s disability and learn to work within its confines, rather than expecting the disability to go away. Learning a child’s strengths and helping her compensate for weaknesses will play an important role in fostering success.
