Every Child is Unique and Different... We Guide them with Love, Care, and Safety for a Brighter Future
Meth Mihira Special Education Centre proudly boasts purpose-built facilities to cater for
students with a wide range of intellectual, physical and associated disabilities. Lifelong learning emphasizes the importance we place on personalizing the curriculum for every student to maximize their potential. Our professional teaching and ancillary staff are highly skilled and support students to successfully achieve their individual goals, which is embedded in the delivery of the National Curriculum.
Meth Mihira Special Education Centre is widely recognized for its attention to student
wellbeing. The Centre strategic improvement plan highlights the role of relationships in
effective learning, learner engagement and achievement. We take a holistic approach to our student's education and understand the importance of working in partnership with students; families and careers and the wider community to achieve this.
I invite you to explore our website for more information about our Centre community and what we offer.
Rev. Sr. Antoinette Jeyaseeli SCJM
Directress
Meth Mihira Special Education Centre
Meth Mihira, run by the Congregation of the Sisters of charity of Jesus and Mary, caters for children and young adults in Koralawella, Moratuwa.
The charism of the Congregation centers on compassionate love and desires to reach and serve people of different categories who are vulnerable and needing a helping hand enabling them to journey forward from whatever place they are in.
Serving here, with the differently abled or those with special needs, the sisters strive to help every child learn in varying situations. Providing learning experiences that build cognitive function and motivating those under their care to always go beyond, to be ready to take another step!!
Whatever obstacles and challenges the sisters have to face does not daunt them. The aim is to help the child, to retain, understand and use whatever knowledge they pick up to build new relationships and conceive new connections and to use critical thinking in their own little way.
As a congregation involved in many apostolates, this apostolate to the differently gifted child, gives emphasis to building up a child or young person to take his or her rightful place in society, having a dignity which is inherent in every human being but which might not be recognized by the child or sadly even by those who associate closely with him/her.
In the words and practice of professor Feurstein " If you believe that a child can change, you will do something to make sure he does. if you don't believe you don't do. The most important thing to consider as we approach a child , is what we believe about him and what we hope for, for her". Along with our charism, this is what motivates the sisters and staff working in the services of the special child. This we witness in Meth Mihira.
Rev. Sr. Anastasia
The Cordinator of the Apostalate of Special Needs
Meth Mihira Special Education Centre
1. To provide the best possible care, training and education for the child or young person with a disability or is differently-abled in Sri Lanka, this facilitates and stimulates the psychological, sensory, intellectual and spiritual growth and development.
2. To provide a program suited for each individual that maximizes their ability to grow towards a degree of independent living.
3. To give a good foundation for the establishment of a basic sense of trust in people and in the environment and to encourage them to use to the full their own experiences in understanding and mastering the world around them.
4. The cooperation and education of the family and society is very essential. Therefore, regular programs for parents, siblings, relatives and friends are organized.
5. A high quality training for the staff of our Centers will always be ensured. This will be in collaboration with others centers and with other organizations at either national or international level. Constant updating and keeping informed with the latest techniques and methods of approach is essential.
6. The ultimate goal is to make the child/adult with a different ability, a productive member of society, as his/her ability permits, while at the same time respecting his/her individuality as a person and their God given dignity and worth.
