MRI of the brain may be normal. More severely affected children will show patchy white matter T2 hyperintensities and cerebellar atrophy. Some patients may have subependymal heterotopias. MRS may show a peak at 1.9 ppm, related to mobile lipids, ketone bodies, and acetate.
