A variant of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (2% of cases) complicated by hemorrhagic necrosis of the lesions of ADEM. This has been associated in a minority of cases with herpes simplex, influenza A, varicella-zoster, human herpesvirus 6, and Epstein-Barr infections
