The cultural progression of ballet is slow, but inexorable. Every ballet dancer is responsible for pushing the limits and challenging the norms. While audiences are accustomed to finding beauty in ballet on certain bodies, from a distance, on a stage, there is so much more for ballet to explore. B(all)et is a response to this particular moment in our lives as dancers, Americans, and humans. It attempts to scratch the surface of representation and seeks to uncover joy. Ballet must evolve as an art to be celebrated by all.
Katie Ryan is adjunct dance faculty at Mesa College, Grossmont College, and Southwestern College. She danced professionally as a seasonal artist with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet (2008-2014) and full time with contemporary company BodyVox in Portland, Oregon (2011-2014). She has her BFA in Ballet from the University of Utah and her Master of Science in Education: Curriculum and Instruction from Portland State University.
