For my Gold Award, I focused on aiding the child/teen Foster Care Program in Cabarrus County. These children go in and out of the Department of Human services on a regular basis. Pulled from class or their homes unexpectedly, the kids need somewhere to go. Social workers normally keep the kids with them during the day, trying to find a placement for them, but this lowers the worker’s productivity and isn’t useful for the kids. To combat these issues, I decided to create a room where kids of all ages can go to get work done, fill out applications, play, and in emergency situations, spend the night.
