MiraCosta College | MATH 102 | Online | Course Numbers 1334 & 1335 | 6/15/20 - 8/7/20
In this math class, new topics typically build on previous material. For that reason, I ask that you keep current with the class assignments. The best learning experience is one in which you keep pace with the posted due dates to aid with deeper understanding. Additionally, engaging in the practice opportunities and reading in a timely manner will provide you with sufficient time to seek help in topics you may struggle with by attending to my office hours or reaching out to your squad. Keep in mind that while you learn you will struggle, perhaps even make mistakes and that is ok! Don't let that keep you from trying, on the contrary think of it as a growth opportunity!
I am asked every semester if students can turn in late assignments. I understand that life happens and there are times when turning in an assignment by the due date is just not going to happen. This puts both of us in a peculiar situation! I want to be able to help out but I can’t always do so. When students ask about late assignments, I have to take into account how the assignment impacts the flow of the class and the goals for what you take away from this class. With both of these in mind the following policy seems to work best:
I love hearing from my students! Please use the Canvas inbox to email me. You will hear from me within 24 hours, usually much sooner. There is nothing too trivial to email me about, and I will never feel "bugged" by too many emails from you. No question or concern is too small, and there's no such thing as a "stupid question." Please be aware that I may not check email on weekends or evenings, but that I pride myself on prompt responses.
Attendance is essential to your success in this course. In our online class, your attendance is based on participation in the weekly discussion board and completion of assignments. Please log in to the class early and often so that you can stay on top of the assignments and readings for the week. This is particularly important during the first week of class. If you have not logged in or completed the first week’s discussion board and assignments by the deadline, I am required to drop you from the course as a “No Show”; this also gives other students the ability to join the class from the waitlist. Please make sure you complete the assignment readings and assignments as early as your schedule allows that week. In the event you miss four or more assignments prior to the drop or withdrawal dates, that is considered excessive absences in the online environment, and I may need to drop you from the course.
By communicating with me early and often, I can make sure you have all the resources you need to complete this course.
If you choose to drop the course, you can do this through SURF. If you do not complete this by the deadlines listed in the catalog, you will receive a failing grade. Before dropping the class, please see your counselor!

You are to work by yourself and may not seek help from another person or the internet in any way. If I doubt that the work submitted is yours, I will arrange for an oral exam where a new set of questions will be asked. The grade that you will receive from the oral exam will be recorded and will replaced your written exam grade.
Often referred to as "netiquette," here is a gentle reminder of the interaction practices and rules we'll follow in all our interactions in this course.
If you ever feel that someone is not following these rules, please send an email to me using the Canvas Inbox and describe your concerns.
