We reached out to the spreadingtheloveproject via Instagram in order to learn more about their thoughts and goals with mental health. This conversation also allowed for us to understand and learn more about the campaign making process.
Q. What are your thoughts on the stigma around mental health?
A. The stigma surrounding mental health is very real, unfortunately very damaging. It's a terrible thing that has to end, in order to save lives.
Q. What can schools implement to bring more attention to mental health?
A. I think schools can implement clubs, activities, week long events, open door meetings with counselors/therapist at the school to help bring attention to mental health.
Q. What has your work with mental health taught you?
A. My work with mental health has taught me that nearly everyone has mental health issues, not everyone copes with them the same. People feel embarrassed to ask for help due to the stigma surrounding it, i've even found myself scared to ask for help.
Q. Any ending thoughts you would want to say regarding mental health in the youth?
A. Mental health is so important for our youth, i actually started this project at 15! I'm now 17, still continue trying to help our youth find the strength to ask for help. Unfortunately our youth now deals with a lot more mental health issues than other generations, which people don't seem to understand.
To understand our purpose you first have to understand the basis of our Campaign. We want people to understand the variety of health concerns with depression.
Age Groups:
6-11
13-18
22-26
We want to educate that mental health should be promoted through every age group not just a singular age range considering depression can develop in early childhood. Learn more about depression for each age group.
One of the hypotheses that we have come up with is that adulthood depression can develop during the early stage of childhood which tends to get overlooked.
Facts
3-5% of children are affected by major depression.
More than 70% of that 3 - 5 % of children do not receive the right treatment and medication.
Since this is the development stage in most children's lives it is important to understand that depression isn't on a timeline it can occur at any time.
The severity from children to children changes.
This is a crucial part of time for many parents. In this period, children are starting to go to high school which is a definitive part of someone's character. Not only can the child themself feel fierce depression, but it is important to realize it is ok for you the parent to feel depression as well.
Facts
Many times kids are bullied and forced on to be lonely which causes self-doubt or depression.
Home life such as the idea of perfection has a toll on many kids this age which leads to dramatic damage when they do one thing wrong
Exposure to substance abuse ultimately raises the chance of suicide or leads to depression/ other health issues
A bigger issue in today's day and age is the growing suicide rate between the ages of 22-25. I feel many times depression gets looked at in the 13-18 range understandably due to its growing impact
Facts
This age range has the highest suicide rate
At this stage, many health professionals say that it is understandable due to the workload and now being on your step in life
10.7-31.9% of 22-27 year olds have depression of some sort
This is a valuable time in a child's life and it is important to understand that your mind is not completely developed and don't give up just yet. Some steps to do if you do feel sad or have depression are...
Step 1- talk about it(one of the factors that help with depression is just being able to speak about your depression. Just being able to talk about it has helped many in this position.
Step 2- Find healthy habits(Doing something fun and healthy will in odds help keep you headstrong and lead to a more positive lifestyle and a good feeling).
Step 3- If you are at a serious point with depression we suggest getting help immediately. THis point is different for everyone, but if you have a lost love of life we suggest you reach the suicide hotline listed in our reasources
Our goal is to let your parents know that you are not alone in your journey to identify and treat not only your depression but possibly your kids as well.
Step 1- work on yourself/work together(if you have depression it is important to know that you should not focus all the time on your children you should set some time to work on yourself while helping your kids as hard as that may seem).
Step 2- Get some help(a variety of health professionals are educated and trained in this work which would be a great resource for you and your child.
Step 3- be aware(don't force your child or you to come to terms with depression let it happen naturally).
