Second Step is the social emotional curriculum that is taught in every classroom on a weekly basis. In class, children are learning a simple but effective calming technique. When experiencing a "strong feeling" children are instructed to 1. Stop or Pause. 2. Name the Feeling. 3. Put their hands on their bellies and take three deep belly breaths. All kiddos where Second Step is implemented would likely be familiar with this technique and language. Reinforcing it at home can only make this even more effective. Side note: many of the adults teaching Second Step have adopted this approach for themselves. That being said, Second Step has provided families with useful resources.
