Online Tutorials for Scenario-Based, AI-Supported Chinese Speaking
This sample tutorial is part of a set of scenario-based online tutorials developed during my MA project to support Chinese speaking development through AI-supported instruction. The tutorials are organized around three everyday communicative contexts: eating at a restaurant, buying clothing at a store, and navigating an airport. Across all scenarios, they follow a consistent pedagogical structure that moves learners from foundational language use to more complex interaction.
The “Buying Clothing at a Store” scenario is presented here as a representative example. The tutorial begins by introducing the shopping context, followed by primary skills practice focused on asking about prices and basic product information. Learners then move into advanced communication, where they engage with bargaining and culturally informed negotiation strategies, supported by guided decision-making tasks such as multiple-choice questions and in-class video discussion.
The tutorial also addresses post-purchase interactions, including handling returns and exchanges, allowing learners to practice problem-solving language that requires greater communicative flexibility. It culminates in an integrated real-world task in which learners complete a full clothing store interaction by combining price inquiry, bargaining, and return or exchange requests. The tutorial reflects an iterative teaching process informed by classroom implementation and emphasizes the value of authenticity in scenario-based language teaching.

If you are interested in the pedagogical thinking behind this tutorial design, the video below provides a teaching-focused presentation based on my MA project, Exploring Third-Year Chinese Learners’ Perceptions of ChatGPT in Enhancing Speaking Proficiency. The presentation introduces the instructional rationale for using ChatGPT in Chinese speaking development and explains how research insights are translated into classroom practice.
The video covers the overall structure of the project, including the teaching-oriented introduction, background, research questions, methodology, key findings, pedagogical implications, and conclusion. Rather than presenting detailed data analysis, the focus is on instructional design, task development, and guiding students to use AI tools effectively for communication and speaking practice.
This teaching presentation was initially created for a job application interview. However, the pedagogical principles and teaching approaches demonstrated in this video are universally applicable and reflect my consistent teaching philosophy.
To provide additional context for the pedagogical design presented above, this teaching approach is informed by my MA project, which explores third-year Chinese learners’ perceptions of using ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode to support speaking practice in scenario-based online tutorials. The study highlights learners’ perceived benefits, concerns, and the practical considerations that emerged during implementation.
