A Surf Rescue Certificate to Bronze Medallion Course is a bridging course between the two awards. The Surf Rescue Certificate makes up part of the Bronze Medallion and SLS recognising this foundational knowledge. SRC-Bronze courses re-fresh the skills of the SRC and focus on the additional skills of the Bronze Medallion.
The Surf Rescue Certificate to Bronze Medallion Course is a course that provides participants with skills and knowledge related to surf awareness, aquatic rescue operations, radio operations, resuscitation, emergency care, spinal management, communication, teamwork and Surf Life Saving patrol operations.
Yes. Candidates who hold a proficient SRC already hold some of the units of competency that make up the Bronze Medallion. The SRC proficiency ensures that these SRC candidates are 'proficient' in those units and do not require a 're-assessment'. An SRC-Bronze assessment is a smaller assessment than a full Bronze Medallion assessment as it only assesses the 'difference' in the two awards.
The SRC-Bronze Medallion pathway can be used for our youth members who are making their way up through age groups. It can also be used for members who wish to complete their Bronze in 'stages' due to time constraints or who are working on their swimming/general fitness.

Talk to your Chief Instructor. Our SLSSA club member education is run by volunteers which means that we depend on our trainer availability to run courses for members. Please reach out to your club Chief Instructor to confirm that a SRC-Bronze Medallion is running with availability. If there is not a SRC-Bronze Medallion course available at your local club, your Chief Instructor can work with you to establish when a course will be available or find a course running nearby.
Make sure you have the time to commit. While the SRC-BM pathway is much less extensive than a full Bronze course, you still need to establish the time commitment and ensure you have the time. Each club will run this program differently. There is scope for clubs to run this course as an intense structure over a series of full days, or smaller sessions over a longer time period. Your Chief Instructor will give you these details.
Get in the Pool. The Bronze Medallion has a strict pre-requisite swim of 400m in 9 minutes or less. It's a really good idea to hop in the pool and time yourself to make sure you can make this swim time to determine if you are able to start SRC-Bronze training or need to spend some time working on your swimming first.
A Bronze trainer or Assessor from your club will formally time your swim before you can start your training. Your Chief Instructor will advise you of a date and time for your swim.
Ensure SRC is proficient. Your SRC must be proficient to qualify for the SRC-Bronze training and assessment pathway.

Attend your training & assessment: Once you're completely set up with the steps above, you need to make sure you attend all of your training sessions. Once you have undergone your SRC-Bronze training, you will attend a SRC-Bronze Medallion Assessment. You will be assessed for your SRC-Bronze Medallion at an external assessment hosted by SLSSA. Your Chief Instructor will give you the details of your Bronze assessment.
*Note - if a SRC-BM assessment does not work with your training timeline, you are more than welcome to attend a full Bronze assessment. Please be aware that if you attend a full Bronze Medallion assessment, you will be assessed on ALL Bronze assessment tasks.
