The Bronze Medallion / Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) (PUA20119) course provides participants with the skills and knowledge of basic surf awareness in order to be able to participate in lifesaving operations. The course covers all aspects of Lifesaving including rescues‚ the provision of first aid, spinal management, radio communication and beach management.
This is a core award to be a surf lifesaver in Australia. Surf Life Saving SA recommends that participants complete a proficiency for their Bronze Medallion annually.
Be a financial member of an SLS club.
Course candidates minimum 14 years old to commence training.
Course candidates minimum 15 years old at date of final assessment.
Be able to swim 400m in 9 minutes or less (goggles and mask permitted)‚ in a swimming pool of at least 25m in length or over a measured open-water course. This swim will be observed by an education team member prior to you undertaking any water training or assessment activities.
Talk to your Chief Instructor. Our SLSSA club member education is run by volunteers which means that we depend on our trainer availability to run courses for members. Please reach out to your club Chief Instructor to confirm that a Bronze Medallion is running with availability. If there is not a Bronze Medallion course available at your local club, your Chief Instructor can work with you to establish when a course will be available or find a course running nearby.
Make sure you have the time to commit. You can expect your Bronze Medallion course to take 6-8 weeks depending on the group. Most SA clubs run their Bronze training twice a week (typically a weeknight evening + a weekend morning). You will need to attend all session to set yourself up for success at your Bronze assessment. You will be required to undertake a series of self-directed eLearning modules as part of your Bronze Medallion.
Get in the Pool. The Bronze Medallion has a strict pre-requisite swim of 400m in 9 minutes or less. It's a really good idea to hop in the pool and time yourself to make sure you can make this swim time to determine if you are able to start Bronze training or need to spend some time working on your swimming first.
A Bronze Medallion trainer or assessor at your club will formally time your swim before you can start your training. Your Chief Instructor will advise you of the date and time for your swim.
Organise your membership. Bronze candidate must be financial members of their SLS club to undergo their Bronze training and assessment. Each club has different requirements for their membership. You need to make contact with your club to establish fees, pay membership, and provide a WWCC (if required).
Membership fees are paid through the SLS Members Area. If you do not have a members area account, you will need to set one up at: SLS Members Area
*If you are part of a Family account, you must create your own SLS Members Portal account before you commence training. If you are a parent helping a child set up an account, they MUST have their own account and cannot use the family account for their training. This is because their eLearning needs to be attached to their individual account/name, not a family account. You can re-link your child back to your family account the account is set up under the 'Membership' tab in the parent account to maintain any family memberships or discounts at club level.
Set up your eLearning. Within your SLS Members Area, you will need to enrol into the Bronze Medallion eLearning. The eLearning has 2 components: Online Learning Modules & Online Assessment. Your trainer will prompt you with when they would like you to complete your modules and assessments.
To enrol into your Bronze Medalion eLearning follow this navigation:
Login to Members Area > eLearning > Login to eLearning > Training Library > SLS Aquatic Rescue > Bronze Medallion > Enrol
Once you have enrolled into your Bronze eLearning it will show in 'My Training' when you return.
Enrol into Bronze Course. You will need to enrol yourself into the Bronze course through aXcelerate.

Scroll through the list to find your SLS club and click enrol. If you do not have an aXcelerate global account, you will need to create one. *Important: your aXcelerate details are NOT the same as your SLS Members area details - these are 2 different systems.
You will need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to enrol into your Bronze Medallion. If you do not have one, you can create one easily at: https://www.usi.gov.au/
If you have a USI but can't find it, you can use the above link to find your USI.

Link to Training Manual: PSAR 35
Attend your training & assessment: Once you're completely set up with the steps above, you need to make sure you attend all of your training sessions. Once you have undergone your Bronze training, you will attend a Bronze Medallion Assessment. You will be assessed for your Bronze Medallion at an external assessment hosted by SLSSA. Your Chief Instructor will give you the details of your Bronze assessment.
