The competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism; provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession.
This artifact is from my final exam for my Children's Literature course. I wrote a letter to a parent who, in a fictional scenario, had written an angry letter to me and requested I not use a certain book in my ELA classroom.
This artifact meets Indicator 9L, which states that the competent teacher "communicates with families, responds to concerns, and contributes to enhanced family participation in student education." With this assignment, I responded to the very immediate concern a parent may have about the literature I chose to use in my classroom. I had to explain why I chose the book without getting into an argument or becoming defensive. I also offered the fictional parent alternatives in case they were needed.
I learned a lot from this exercise. It was the first letter I wrote to a parent, even though it was for an assignment. It helped me to put myself in the role of teacher early on in the program, and think about how I will respond in the future.
This artifact is an essay I wrote for my Geography course. We read a book, "When Helping Hurts," about responding to poverity and helping those that are in need. I reflected on the text and responded to the ideas the author asserted about how we as a society should deal with the problem of poverty.
This artifact meets Indicator 9G, which states that the competent teacher "understands local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture." Reading this text and writing this paper made me attain a better grasp on the nature of poverty and what might be the right way to go about it. Additionally, it reminded me that these are some of the issues that I want my students to be aware of as well, since one of my goals is to teach them to be well-rounded adults.
I learned much about poverty and the ways that people often try to help, even with good intentions, but end up hurting the people they are trying to serve instead. This assignment reminded me of the responsibility I have to teach my students to form their own opinions, and to be aware of the wider issues in our world today.
