The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
This artifact is a Flipped Classroom lesson that I created for my Technology in Education course. It includes a brief lesson plan outlining the procedures of a flipped lesson, a Google Slides presentation, and a Loom screencast. The topic I chose to teach was the concept of satire.
This artifact aligns with Indicator 5C, which states that the competent teacher "knows how to implement effective differentiated instruction through the use of a wide variety of materials, technologies, and resources." The flipped classroom lesson is a perfect example of using different materials and technologies to teach a unique lesson. It also incorporates differentiation based on what the students have done independently.
I learned a lot by creating this artifact. This was the first time that I used the Loom software to record myself, and I was surprised at how well it turned out. Initially, I had been self-conscious recording my voice. Overall, this helped to build my confidence in this area, and also increased my proficiency with using new types of technology.
This artifact is a unit plan that was part of a group assignment for my Fine Arts in Education course. Myself and my teammates created a unit that incorporated fine arts into a high school health class. The unit included a summative project with a rubric as well as a theme night that invited the community to participate.
This unit plan meets Indicator 5D, in which the competent teacher "understands disciplinary and interdisciplinary instructional approaches and how they relate to life and career experiences." I planned lessons and assessments for a completely different discipline than my own. I was able to implement a different approach to reaching the goals of our unit through the different fine arts we were assigned to incorporate. Finally, my group and I created an experience that could be shared with the larger community.
I learned how to include different disciplines in my lessons through this assignment. It gave me the opportunity to get out of my comfort zone and include music, art, and dance in a complete unit. Additionally, it allowed me to plan with colleagues - I had never planned a lesson collaboratively before we created this artifact.
