Sustainability Viewpoint
Topics of sustainability have been incorporated differently within every class I have taken in the Fashion Department at the University of Delaware. Moreover, this allowed me to create my own opinion towards the issues that arise with sustainable and ethical fashion. Many retailers have created an approach towards becoming more ethical in regards to sourcing, manufacturing, and designing clothing, but not enough companies are making the proper changes to act sustainably. However, I think more players in the industry need to be taking the opportunity to be transparent with consumers and integrate more efficient sustainability practices in every aspect of their supply chain. Every company has an impact on the environment and making changes will hopefully cause a trickle effect, so that the industry as a whole will transform. The pandemic has spotlighted sustainability, causing more consumers to demand better clothing. In turn, hopefully this will open the eyes of some companies; shifting gears to a more sustainable future with the customer in mind.
After gaining insight on sustainability and ethical practices in the industry, I vow to myself to look into companies' transparency with consumers and sourcing methods when applying to jobs. Wherever I may end up, I want to work for a company that has strong beliefs towards a more sustainable future and I want my values on the topic to align with theirs.
