I am going to be planning micro-environments for the Silver Scroll and Small Native Image. I am going to use silvercloth for the Silver Scroll and house it in a small polyethylene suspension box to support it. I selected the Silver Scroll as I wanted to utilize silvercloth for one of my micro-environments. For the Small Native Image, I am going to make a board covered in batting and muslin. I will also make a snake to support its neck and knees but leave room in the back for its hump. Then I will secure the artifact to the snake and board with cotton tying tape. I picked the Small Native Image as I previously made a storage support for it, like the one described above, in my internship at the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History.
Elizabeth Fouts from the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History is the source I used for the Small Native Image micro-environment. She guided me through making the support for it during my internship. For the Silver Scroll micro-environment I referenced this website, https://conservators.byu.edu/
Items for Silver Scroll Micro-environment:
Pacific Silvercloth: 38” width by 3 yards long - This is the smallest amount of silvercloth I could find. It would also be useful for The Cursed Amethyst from my collection. $75.65 https://www.gaylord.com/Preservation/Conservation-Supplies/Cleaning-Supplies/Pacific-Silvercloth%26%23174%3B/p/HYB01546?mpcCode=ZZ
Rectangular Suspension Box: Fits up to 4 3/32” W x 2 1/8” L x 2 5/16” H - This case would fit the Silver Scroll's dimensions. It is a suspension box so when the artifact is wrapped in the silvercloth and placed inside the box it will fit snugly. It will not be able to move once the box is closed due to polyether polyurethane membranes in the top and bottom of the case. $44.99 https://www.gaylord.com/Preservation/Natural-History-Preservation/Storage-Boxes-%26-Trays/Rectangular-Suspension-Box/p/HYB09181
Items for Small Native Image Micro-environment:
Gaylord Archival B-Flute Corrugated Board Sheets (10 pack): 8” x 10” - This is to make a board for supporting the artifact. It can also potentially be used to make boards, boxes and box lids for other artifact storage supports. $12.40 https://www.gaylord.com/Preservation/Conservation-Supplies/Boards-%26-Paper/Gaylord-Archival%26%23174%3B-B-flute-Corrugated-Board-Sheets-%2810-Pack%29/p/HYB00953
½ inch Polyester Batting (20 yards): This will be cut down to the size of the board that was cut to hold the artifact. Then the batting will be sewn onto the board using X shapes in each corner. This batting will be useful for other object supports. $137.65 https://www.gaylord.com/Preservation/Conservation-Supplies/Wrapping%2C-Lining-%26-Support-Materials/1-2%22-Polyester-Batting-%2820-yds-%29/p/POLYBAT-A?mpcCode=ZZ
Bookbinders Sharp Straight Sewing Needles (25-pack): This will be used to sew the batting and muslin to the board and sew up the stockinette tubing that will become the snake. $26.40 https://www.gaylord.com/Preservation/Book-%26-Pamphlet-Preservation/Repair-Tools-%26-Supplies/Other-Tools-%26-Supplies/Bookbinder%27s-Sharp-Tip-Straight-Sewing-Needles-%2825-Pack%29/p/39011?mpcCode=ZZ
X-acto Large Graphic Knife: This will be used to cut the board and batting down to size for the support. $9.59 https://www.gaylord.com/Preservation/Conservation-Tools-%26-Equipment/Hand-Tools/X-ACTO%26%23174%3B-Large-Graphic-Knife/p/HM23?mpcCode=ZZ
Dahle Self-healing Cutting Mat: This will make it safer to cut using the X-Acto knife and will prevent damage to the table surface beneath it. $48.40 https://www.gaylord.com/Preservation/Conservation-Tools-%26-Equipment/Hand-Tools/Dahle%26%23174%3B-Cutting-Mat/p/HYB01247?mpcCode=ZZ
Cotton Twine (4,000 yards): It will be used to sew the batting and muslin to the board and to form the stockinette into a snake style cushion. $26.10 https://www.gaylord.com/Preservation/Textile-Preservation/Tissue-%26-Preservation-Materials/Cotton-Twine-%284%2C000-yds-%29/p/59018?mpcCode=ZZ
Cotton Muslin: 45” W x 5 yards - The muslin will enclose the board and batting making a slightly cushioned board. $61.45 https://www.gaylord.com/Preservation/Textile-Preservation/Tissue-%26-Preservation-Materials/Cotton-Muslin/p/HYB01362
Stockinette Tubing: 2” W x 25 yards - I will make a snake out of the stockinette tubing and fill it with the pellets. Then I will sew the side of the circle together about an inch up from the bottom and a half inch from the top. This will leave room for the hump to sit inside the circle so that it doesn’t put undue pressure on the hump and all other parts, like the stem and feet, are supported. $29.40 https://www.gaylord.com/Preservation/Conservation-Supplies/Wrapping%2C-Lining-%26-Support-Materials/Stockinette-Tubing/p/HYB01363
Polypropylene Pellets (2 lbs): I will use these to fill the snake so that it can support all of the statuette. $12.49 https://www.gaylord.com/Preservation/Book-%26-Pamphlet-Preservation/Repair-Tools-%26-Supplies/Other-Tools-%26-Supplies/Polypropylene-Pellets-%282-lbs-%29/p/7720P?mpcCode=ZZ
Unbleached Cotton Tying Tape: 5/16” - This will be used to tie the artifact to the board and snake. I will tie one length of the tying tape around the stem, which is the space between the head and the bowl on top of it, and I’ll tie another length across the torso area. It will be fastened tightly to make sure the artifact is unable to shift or slip free of the support. $14.75 https://www.gaylord.com/Preservation/Book-%26-Pamphlet-Preservation/Repair-Tools-%26-Supplies/Tape/Unbleached-Cotton-Tying-Tape-%28100-yds-%29/p/HYB00649
