This website was a semester long project for the University of Iowa's Collections Care and Management Course taught by Tiffany Adrain.
Each of the above tabs were part of assignments throughout the semester. Descriptions of each assignment by tab name are below:
Collections - Contains the 10 artifacts I chose for my virtual museum, featuring different types of artifacts with a range of materials. Beneath each artifact is a description about what it is, where it is from and other information. Each artifact was assigned a different agent of deterioration and an explanation of the effects that agent would have on them. All artifacts in my virtual museums belong to various museums around the world which I researched.
Micro-environments - I described how to create the best micro-environment for two of my virtual museum artifacts and provide a reference or source that I used to determine the best micro-environment. Then I made a list of materials, including the prices from archival supply websites, and justified each item in order to create a budget for funding.
Disaster Response: Rapid Collection Assessment - Responding to a flood event at the museum I made a collections inventory, determined the potential water damage to each artifact, determined salvage priorities, and created a triage system to determine the best method of stabilizing each artifact.
Accessions Register and Collection Catalog - I created both an accessions register and collection catalog with data dictionaries and terminology guidelines for each.
Collections Use - Using one of the artifacts, I illustrated the six uses of museum collections listed in the National Parks Services Museum Handbook. These six uses are exhibition use, interpretation, education use, publication, reproduction, and derivatives.
Museum Policy - I provided policies for visiting the collections, loans, destructive/invasive analysis, copyright, and reproductions by researching various museums' policies.
