Community Mentorships

Program Overview 2024-25

Now, more than ever before young adults in our community need role models, encouragement, and face-to-face interaction. Can you think of a mentor in your life who influenced your decisions, habits, or future for the better? You could be that mentor to a high school student! The MedTech Academy at San Diego High School (SDHS) is currently recruiting mentor volunteers who would like to give their time and wisdom to our students. 

Our goal each year is to connect every MedTech 11th grader to a mentor volunteer who can guide their academic and career decisions.  Mentors are carefully matched to small groups of two to three students and mentors meet with students monthly in person during the school day. All agendas, materials, and training are provided! See below for quick program facts and specific meeting dates and topics.

Mentor-Student Session Details:

• Commitment: Mentors make a 5-month commitment: one in-person meeting per month from January to May during the school day. It is important that mentors attend each and every session.

• Session Topics:  Agendas for each meeting are pre-planned activities that focus on topics such as: the RIASEC test, Career Exploration, Resumes, Elevator Pitches, Mock Interviews and 10-year Plans. 

• Location:  Sessions are held at San Diego High School and supervised by SDHS staff. 

• Dates:  A mentor orientation will be held in mid-November virtually. Mentor-student meetings will be held during the third week of the month on either Wednesday or Thursday based on our A/B schedule. 

Mentor Volunteer Steps to Apply:

(1) Register online via this Google Form indicating your interest in serving as a mentor to our students.

(2) Complete Mentor Orientation in mid-November (synchronous, virtual)- Thurs, Nov 14, 4-4:30pm

(3) Match-up is done by MedTech Academy staff who will match you to a student group fitting your submitted profile. 

(4) Commit to attending 5 mentor-student sessions, in person, during the school day, starting in January 2025.

Thurs, Nov 14, 2024- Mentor Orientation (virtual, synchronous)

Thurs, Jan 16, 2025- First Mentor meeting with students (in-person)

Wed, May 14, 2025 -Last Mentor meeting with students and End of Program Celebration! (in-person)
