Netflix Inc. was founded by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in 1997 in the United States of America. In 1999, it began its DVD rental service in which customers would pay a monthly fee which would allow them to order DVDs from Netflix's website. Their website housed thousands of movies and television shows, though subscribers could only have a certain number of DVDs at once depending on their subscription plan. By the year 2000, Netflix had introduced an algorithm that would recommend movies and shows to users based on their ratings of other products. The biggest innovation Netflix has seen occurred in 2007 when they introduced the option to stream some movies and television from their online website to consumers' homes for a monthly fee. This was the world's first streaming service, and it forever changed the entertainment industry. In 2009, Netflix began partnering with various video game and blue-ray companies to offer their service on their platforms. Netflix's streaming strategy expanded in 2010 when they offered a streaming-only subscription void of DVD orders in exchange for near unlimited streaming of its vault of content. In addition, Netflix began international distribution with their service being available in Canada in 2010, the Caribbean and Latin America in 2011, and the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Scandinavia in 2012. By 2016, Netflix is available in more than 190 countries worldwide. Netflix once again shook up the entertainment industry in 2013 with the launch of its first fully-original series, House of Cards (2013-2018). Now in 2020, Netflix has over 1000 original productions, 183 million subscribers, and is valued at around 21.2 billion dollars.
