There is abundant research showing that providing training to mentors and mentees can increase motivation, set expectations, avoid misunderstandings, and develop skills needed to succeed in a mentoring relationship.
Using ChatGPT Plus, I developed both an online training for mentors/mentees that could be completed asynchronously and a half-day instructor-led training. More specific information about each is provided below.
The online version of training was built in Canvas. I used ChatGPT to devise the text outputs for the content in each module after prompting it with the outcomes and skills to focus. I reviewed all AI output for accuracy and adapted the output for more humanized language and provided context where needed.
The following tools were used for this project:
ChatGPT Plus for text output
HeyGen video creation for the welcome videos and assignment scenarios
Genially for a branching scenario activity.
This welcome video was created using HeyGen. I selected an avatar and voice that seemed appropriate for the purpose, developed the script to copy and paste into the program, and edited until I was satisfied with the output.
This practice activity was created using Genially. I used a ready-made template and built it out using a branching scenario I created using ChatGPT Plus for assistance to ensure the branches worked as expected.
The mentor and mentee courses are separate, but both contain similar home pages with welcome videos, learning outcomes, and a link to begin the course.
The course contains a start here module with relevant help and introductory information necessary to be successful in the course. The modules are all designed with consistency and user experience in mind and comply with WCAG accessibility guidelines.
This is an example of one of the practice quizzes in the course. All of the questions relate to the video that is shared at the top of the page and can be referenced as often as needed to complete the quiz. This design is more engaging and interactive to help give students real-world practice in receiving critical feedback.
I used ChatGPT to help devise the agenda after prompting it with the outcomes and skills on which I wanted to focus. I then tweaked the AI output and created the following:
Facilitator guides for both mentor and mentee training (Microsoft Word)
Activity cards used during the training (Canva; free bingo card generator)
