The 6-week blended training curriculum was designed to help on-ground instructors gain the skills and knowledge to be able to teach engaging blended courses using a flipped approach. The experience was originally designed in Brightspace (D2L) and later exported to Canvas. The training modeled the flipped approach taught in the curriculum through the use of adult learning theory and online learning best practices. The video on the left was developed for the first week of training. I would run this training every semester including summer due to its popularity.
Audience: Community college instructors wanting to teach blended courses
Responsibilities: Curriculum design, curriculum development, video production and editing, assessment building, training delivery, LMS administration
Authoring Tools: Brightspace (D2L), CSS, Camtasia, HTML5, Adobe Spark, ScreenPal, Canvas
Week 1: Blended Basics
The first week provides learners with an introduction to blended and flipped learning, as well as acclimates them to the online learning management system.
Week 2: Mapping Your Blended Course
Learners are introduced to outcomes-based course design and begin to map their courses to align assessments with outcomes and identify the concepts for which they will need to create or identify online content. The document on the left is an activity we begin during class together so I can provide immediate feedback.
Week 3: Instructional Videos
Instructional videos are often the most intimidating and challenging component for the learners, so we spend quality time together looking at various ways to create instructional videos quickly and easily.
Week 4: Online Activities and Assessments
This week covers online activities and the need for student-to-student, student-to-instructor, and student-to-content interaction, as well as formative and summative assessments and online assessment integrity.
Week 5: Active Learning
Active learning is emphasized so that the online learning experience is engaging and the on-ground sessions move away from lecture and on to activities that are higher level Bloom's Taxonomy.
Week 6: Final Presentations and Reflection
Each learner presents one flipped module of their course including an instructor-created video, additional online content and activities, and the in-class component of their topic. They also reflect upon their training experience.
"Our group had a great time getting to learn new techniques and hearing everyone's ideas. Melissa made it a very comfortable environment and I appreciate all her help. "
"It works great and really teaches two concepts. Video or screencasting plus the flipped classroom model."
"Melissa was a great instructor."
"An excellent course. The objectives were clearly designed to give us an example of the format as we took the course!"
