MDLD 2010:  Steve Bunville

I started out feeling well rested and energetic (Paul's coffee?). A real nice section from Rock Mill north with the sun coming up. I rolled into the swimming pool stop for some more water and off again. I did a turn of the right ankle at mile 8 but this wasn't a problem. Kept on going seeing Paul, Jeff and some others and feeling good. I was on the pace for meeting the challenge up to the Peach Bottom area where Jen caught up with Scott and me. They pulled ahead a little after I found the HoHo at Lay Rd. and I then caught up with them as they were finishing up at Aid stop #1 with the magic ice towels. After that I was getting a little tired and starting to heat up. I took a dip in the Muddy Creek to cool off and noticed Laurie, Swamp and someone else go by while I was in the water. The creek was great and a nice area to run. After I got moving again I soon twisted my right ankle again pretty bad this time due to looking up the creek and the trail having grass on the right side with nothing underneath it except the 15 foot drop slope to the creek. Yikes! I hopped two or three times but kept going but this time I could feel the ankle. I got up to the unscheduled aid stop at Paper Mill road bridge and that was a great idea to have aid there. Then the sunny road trip began up to the Slab Rd water stop where I think it was Valerie's crew (husband?) supplied something good and cold. Thanks! and Phil had the ginger peanut butter sandwiches! At that point I was feeling some blisters and had a long way down the road to the river again. It turns out that I think I wore my sons shoes which are identical to mine except for the size. His are 1/2 size larger than mine so I bet that didn't help. This is the section that Scott caught up to me and we made our way to Lock 12 where I figured I would stop for that day. It is really great to see all the people at the aid stops. I think I needed to take more electrolyte caps than I did and maybe eat more? but the heat makes that tough to do I guess. I got my longest run to date and had a great time running with everyone. It was great to watch the finishers come in at Shanks Mare. Way to go everyone!

Happy Trails,

Steve
