Brief description and history of the organization

President Abdul Hamid Medical College and Hospital (PAHMCH) is a private institution situated at Karimganj Upazilla of Kishoreganj district, Bangladesh. This medical college is named after the honorable and recent past president of Bangladesh, Md. Abdul Hamid, who is the 20th president of this country, was a freedom fighter. This is a full-fledged medical college, which was established in 2013. Meanwhile, the medical college has efficiently admitted 10 (10) batches of freshers from various countries of the world and awarded MBBS degrees to 05 (five) batches (90 students per batch) as an affiliated institution of the University of Dhaka. The medical college is currently running with 80 highly educated faculty members and has ensured technology-based learning, advanced classrooms, and quality laboratory facilities. There is a 250-bed tertiary care teaching hospital within the campus to facilitate clinical training for the students. The hospital is equipped with an ICU, NICU, and dialysis facility, which provides low-cost services to the underprivileged people of the Haor region of Bangladesh. There is also a nursing institute along with the hospital. This institution is relentlessly performing to serve the nation by providing competent and skilled medical graduates.

The motto of this medical college is “We aim to treat not only the body but also the soul”. Our vision is to be the leading medical college in Bangladesh and raise the status of President Abdul Hamid. Throughout the year, the medical college and the hospital organize training and workshops to develop the capacity of the doctors and staff, thereby providing the students with a holistic learning approach and quality hospital services to the patients. At the same time, the faculties of the medical college are committed to conducting basic, clinical, and public health research to add new knowledge to the scientific community of the world.

I initiated a research lab in this medical college in 2021, which is known as the Advanced Molecular Lab. This research-based laboratory in the Haor area is just spreading light for detecting infectious diseases at a very low cost. This is not only the detection of disease but also the saving of human lives in the Haor area. In addition, this lab is doing various research focusing on the remote area and deprived population in Kishoreganj, Bangladesh, such as Premature Rupture of Membrane or PROM. Significantly, he identified the microbiome of PROM patients and identified various early immunological and molecular biomarkers that might be helpful for early diagnosis of PROM.

In the year 2022, the hospital received a research grant from “Integrated Health Science Research & Development Fund Activities” for the project “Determinants of premature rupture of membrane (PROM) in rural Bangladesh: A prospective case-control study”, which has already been completed successfully. We have also researched SARS-CoV-2, Dengue, Nipa, Hepatitis B and C, Rotavirus, Pathogenic bacteria, and Antimicrobial Resistance markers. The team of researchers in PAHMCH is dedicated to generating authentic data for the future health and well-being of the population of the Haor region, as well as Bangladesh. Overall, the institute is tirelessly working to become a state-of-the-art organization in achieving excellence in academic, research, and quality hospital services.

This periphery research laboratory efficaciously providing low cost clinical and public health services for the under privileged people of the haor area and relentlessly performing research in various fields.

Responsibilities

At present, I am performing academic, research, administrative, financial, management, and technical responsibilities for all aspects of the department (including students, employees, equipment and supplies, software, and documentation) as an active senior faculty member of the Department of Microbiology, as well as the head of the Advanced Molecular Lab.

This position has given opportunities to prepare an annual budget for academic activities and lab projects, coordinate and supervise all routine services, ensure quality, increase productivity, and manage as well as coordinate with the overall central activities of the institution.

During the recent deadly global coronavirus infectious disease-19 (Covid-19) pandemic, I have been nominated as the focal point to maintain liaison with central and regional offices of the Directorate General of the Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of Bangladesh (GoB) and ensure execution of Covid-19 diagnostics at the recently renovated BSL 2+ Laboratory of the Dept. of Microbiology to confirm detection of SARS-Cov-2 infected patients among suspects with clinical symptoms at Noakhali and surrounded other two districts.

Achievements

The mentioned job status has offered a great advantage to utilize the enormous potential of the Molecular, Genomics, Environmental, and Serodiagnostic Lab for expansion through collaboration with different laboratories in conducting research on different diseases. The data generated with the results can be utilized for publications as noble research findings. In addition, this laboratory has the potential to initiate multidimensional work related to the immunogenetics, molecular epidemiology, invention of new diagnostic tests, and potential vaccine identification and design. The major achievements are as follows:

1. Performed all designated activities by Head, Laboratories Operation Management for efficiently manage the administrative, financial, management and technical activities of Clinical Lab Services. Prepared and managed forecasted budget to manage diagnostic and project-related activities.

2. Supervised all technical activities in processing all samples for molecular and serodignostic tests. The productivity increased by 20% for overall tests and 26.5% for molecular assays with about 20% increase of client compared to last year. Managed all required logistics as evidenced by uninterrupted service and evaluated ten staff for their competency and overall skill.

3. Expanded participation in the external proficiency scheme for all existing tests available in CAP, USA and obtained 100% score in the assessment.

4. Regularly conducted training with lab staff on both theoretical and practical issues related to basic microbiological and immunological techniques, cell culture, preliminary concepts on protocol and manuscript writing, how to use lab equipment and reagents, basic concepts on PPE and biosafety etc.

5. In addition to the laboratory-based responsibilities, oriented with community-based research programs with proper way of managing collected data & management of resources as well as field trial of vaccine.

6. Published research articles in peer-reviewed journals as mentioned in the publication section.
