Course Task: Developing an Institutional Micro-credential Framework & Learning Pathway

Create a concise framework that explains how your institution will govern, quality assure, and implement micro-credentials as part of its broader teaching and learning strategy.

1. Purpose

   • Why does your institution need a micro-credential framework? What strategic goals or target groups will it support?

2. Guiding Principles

   • List 3–5 core principles (e.g., flexibility, quality, recognition, innovation, inclusivity).

3. Definition

   • Define what constitutes a micro-credential at your institution (credit-bearing, assessed, stackable, short, etc.).

4. Teaching and Learning Modalities

   • Describe which modes will be supported (asynchronous, synchronous, hybrid, blended, workplace-integrated, etc.).

5.  Governance and Approval Processes

   • Identify the committees, offices, or structures responsible for development, quality assurance, and approval.

6. Roles and Responsibilities

   • Outline key responsibilities (e.g., faculties, programme leads, QA office, registry, partnerships).

7.  Supporting Policies and Systems

   • Identify relevant institutional policies, digital platforms, and administrative systems that support implementation.

8. Alignment

   • Link your framework to national qualification frameworks, institutional strategy, and continuing education or lifelong learning priorities.

9. Content and Relevance

   • Explain how the content focus of institutional micro-credentials will be identified and reviewed. How will you ensure that topics remain relevant to learners, societal needs, and the world of work (e.g., sustainability, digitalisation, entrepreneurship)?

Design a Learning Pathway Template for a specific micro-credential or a cluster of related credentials that could be offered at your institution.

• Individual or Group: You may work individually or as a small institutional team.

Participants will present and discuss their draft institutional micro-credential frameworks and learning pathway templates during our next contact session on 12 November at 13:00 SAST.

During this session, we will:

1. Reflect on how your frameworks and pathways align with institutional priorities and contexts.

2. Share approaches to integrating content relevance, assessment methods, and recognition strategies.

3. Identify common challenges and opportunities for collaboration across institutions as we move toward implementation.
